It’s so easy to get wired these days

Wire shelving has taken an incredible journey in the past 20 years. Living in obscurity for much of its life, the product slowly began to seep into the industrial market place in the mid to late 1990’s. Previous to the late 90’s the product was found primarily in Food Service- restaurants and hospitality. The product was so prevalent in these areas that wire items became known as “baker’s Racks” and “food service racks”.

Material Handling distributors and retailers had no idea what wire shelving was, what it was used for, and didn’t realize its’ features and benefits. When given the opportunity to pitch the product by a sales person the concept made sense and heads would nod positively as the product was discussed… all the way to the point where the price was introduced, “WHAT? How much? No way!” was a very common conclusion to a sales presentation. All its’ features and benefits went out the window. The concept of better air circulation, better product visibility, cleanliness and the illumination that the bright shiny chrome brought to a store room was not worth the added cost.

In the very late 90’s and early 2000, the manufacturing of wire shelving moved off-shore. As a result, prices were reduced by 40-60%! Now discussions regarding price went much more smoothly and sticker shock was not the cause of death for many a wire shelving proposal.

Fast forward to today, wire shelving is everywhere! It is virtually used in every kind of business around the world and often found in domestic kitchens and garages. The product can be purchased on the internet, at major retailers, from any Material handling or Industrial Supply catalog, or any other distributor on the planet. Now there are also various kinds of wire shelving: different color choices, different weight capacities, and different finishes for any application. So if getting wired is your thing, Google wire shelving and just be amazed at what you find.
